Lebanon to Proceed with Local Elections Amid Israeli Military Activity

Lebanon is determined to hold its fourth phase of local elections this Saturday in the South and Nabatieh governorates despite ongoing Israeli incursions near the Litani River, Arab News reported. Interior Minister Ahmad Hajjar, speaking in Sidon, emphasized the government’s commitment to conducting the elections with integrity and safety, acknowledging the risks posed by potential Israeli violations during the voting process.

The elections are taking place against a backdrop of heightened tensions. Recently, an Israeli drone strike targeted a motorcycle between Mansouri and Majdalzoun in the Tyre district, injuring nine people, including two children, with three in critical condition. Another drone attack hit fishermen off Ras Al-Naqoura’s coast. These incidents underscore the fragile security situation in southern Lebanon.

Authorities are closely monitoring voter turnout, particularly among displaced residents whose homes have been destroyed. Hezbollah’s influence in the region is also under scrutiny, as reconstruction efforts remain stalled due to ongoing Israeli occupation of strategic border areas and repeated air and maritime violations.

Since the ceasefire on November 27, 2024, Israeli attacks have resulted in 156 deaths and 376 injuries in Lebanon, with over 3,100 air and maritime violations recorded. The Israeli military reports having eliminated around 140 Hezbollah members, primarily south of the Litani River, targeting key units involved in infrastructure rehabilitation.

Despite these challenges, Lebanon’s government insists on moving forward with the elections as a crucial step in the South’s reconstruction and governance.
