WHO Raises Alarm Over Attacks on Healthcare in Lebanon Amid Israeli Offensive

The World Health Organization (WHO) expressed deep concern on Friday regarding the escalating attacks on healthcare workers and facilities in Lebanon amid ongoing Israeli military actions against Hezbollah, Arab News reported yesterday.

WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris emphasized that “health care is not a target; health workers are not a target.”

Recent satellite data indicates that approximately 25% of buildings in southern Lebanon have been damaged or destroyed due to intensified Israeli strikes. An analysis by the Washington Post, in collaboration with academic institutions, revealed significant destruction across 25 municipalities near the Israeli border, with nearly half of the buildings in some areas severely affected.

Since the onset of Israel’s ground offensive last month, the damage has surged, with reports indicating that at least 5,868 buildings have been impacted. The WHO’s statements highlight the urgent need for protection of healthcare infrastructure in conflict zones, as the humanitarian crisis continues to unfold in the region.
