Kuwait’s Emir Dissolves Parliament, Takes Over Some Duties

Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Sabah has dissolved the country’s parliament and assumed some of its powers, Al Jazeera reported yesterday.

The emir cited an “unhealthy atmosphere” and spread of corruption that has “even affected the justice system.”

Weeks after recent elections, the 83-year-old ruler said the failure to form a new government was the result of “the dictates and conditions of some” lawmakers.

He suspended parts of the constitution for up to four years, stating “Kuwait has been through some hard times lately… which leaves no room for hesitation or delay in making the difficult decision to save the country.”

The emir’s actions come amid longstanding political disputes between the parliament and cabinet that have previously led to the dissolution of the legislature.
