At least nine people were killed and 27 others injured when confiscated explosives detonated inside a police station in Indian-administered Kashmir, the region’s police chief said on Saturday, as reported by Reuters. Police Director General Nalin Prabhat told a news briefing that the victims included officers, government employees and forensic experts who were examining the materials when the explosion occurred late Friday.

Prabhat said the cause of the blast is under investigation but stressed there was no indication of militant involvement. According to him, forensic and chemical assessments were underway when “an accidental explosion” took place, adding that further speculation was unwarranted.

A police source said some bodies were severely burned, complicating identification efforts. The force of the blast scattered body parts into nearby residential areas up to 200 meters away. Local officials said the explosion triggered a fire that engulfed parts of the Nowgam police station compound, prompting firefighters to respond.

The incident happened four days after a deadly car explosion in New Delhi that killed at least eight people, which authorities described as a terrorist attack. India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed, have long disputed the Himalayan region of Kashmir and have fought multiple conflicts over the territory.
