Kashmiri activists and supporters staged a large peaceful demonstration in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, calling attention to alleged human rights abuses in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. According to Kashmir News Service, participants sought to expose what they described as India’s repressive policies, chanting slogans such as “Free Kashmir” and criticizing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The protest intensified during the address of Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, with demonstrators rejecting what they saw as misleading claims about the situation in the region. Organizers, including Kashmiri leaders and rights groups, demanded immediate implementation of UN resolutions on Kashmir, stressing that the population has endured decades of political and social repression.

Speakers such as Ghazala Habib, president of Friends of Kashmir International, reaffirmed Kashmiris’ right to self-determination. Sikh leaders also joined the rally, expressing solidarity. Protesters said their movement for justice and freedom remains strong despite ongoing challenges.
