Trump tariffs jeopardize survival of centuries-old Kashmiri carpet industry

The centuries-old Kashmiri carpet industry faces a severe threat due to the Trump administration’s 28% tariffs on imports to the US, Arab News reported.

These tariffs, originally targeting major exporters like China, have unintentionally impacted traditional Kashmiri artisans who rely heavily on the US and European markets. Carpet exports from India to the US are valued at about $1.2 billion, but the increased costs make these hand-knotted silk and wool carpets much more expensive for American consumers.

This price hike risks reducing demand, forcing buyers toward cheaper machine-made alternatives, and causing many artisans to abandon the craft. Despite the rich heritage and skill involved, many weavers struggle financially, with orders already canceled and carpets returned. Without changes in trade policies, the survival of Kashmir’s Muslim-owned hand-knotted carpet industry remains uncertain.
