Extremist Hindu Groups Persecute Kashmiri Vendors in Northern India

In Himachal Pradesh, nomadic shawl vendors from Indian-controlled Kashmir are facing harassment from extremist groups, which claim that the vendors are harming local businesses, VOA reported yesterday.

Reports indicate that these groups have threatened and obstructed the vendors from selling their handmade goods, including Pashmina shawls and leather items.

Local authorities have acknowledged complaints from the vendors and are attempting to mediate the situation. While no physical assaults have been reported, the vendors describe a climate of intimidation, stating that they have been forced to leave markets and have faced verbal abuse.

The ongoing tensions are attributed to rising communalism, with many vendors feeling increasingly unsafe in various Indian states since 2014. Local officials have been urged to ensure the safety of these traders, emphasizing their right to conduct business. The situation remains tense, with hopes for a resolution through dialogue between both parties involved.
