Record Turnout in Kashmir Assembly Elections
The recent assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir have seen a historic voter turnout, with over 69% participation in the final phase on October 1, VOA reported yesterday.
This marks the highest turnout since the region’s armed insurgency began in 1989. The first round on September 18 recorded 61.38%, while the second phase on September 25 saw 57.31%. Overall, the elections, held across three phases for 40 constituencies, achieved a turnout exceeding 63%.
Election officials hailed this engagement as a sign of renewed democratic commitment in an area long affected by militancy. Political analysts noted changing dynamics post-2019’s revocation of special status, leading to increased voter mobilization. Regional parties continue to push for the restoration of statehood amidst ongoing political tensions.
