Jammu and Kashmir Allows Muharram-8 Procession After 34 Years

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has decided to allow the Muharram-8 procession in Srinagar through the traditional route this year, Hindustan Times reported yesterday.

This comes after the procession was banned since 1989 due to alleged “law and order” concerns.

Last year, the lieutenant governor had given the go-ahead, allowing thousands of Shia mourners to participate peacefully. This year, the district administration has granted permission for the procession from Guru Bazar to Dalgate via Budshah Kadal and MA Road, from 6am to 8am on July 15.

The administration has set certain conditions, including no display of provocative slogans, flags or logos of banned organizations.

Organizers have been asked to cooperate with security agencies to maintain public order during the significant religious event for the Shia community.

Last year, over 25,000 Shia mourners participated in a Muharram procession on the traditional route of Gurubazar-Lal Chowk-Dalgate in Srinagar.
