Committee Orders Karbala Entrances to Remain Open During Arbaeen Pilgrimage

Iraq’s Supreme Committee for Million-Person Pilgrimages has directed that all entrances to the holy city of Karbala remain open throughout the Arbaeen pilgrimage of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), as part of efforts to ensure the smooth movement of millions of expected pilgrims.

The directive was announced during a coordination conference held at the Karbala local government headquarters, attended by provincial governors, representatives of relevant ministries, security officials from the Ministries of Defense and Interior, the Popular Mobilization Forces, and traffic directors from several provinces.

The committee identified transportation as one of the main challenges during the Arbaeen pilgrimage and called for expanded transport capacity and additional vehicles to serve pilgrims, particularly during the return phase after the ceremonies conclude.

Officials also instructed relevant authorities to facilitate vehicle access into Karbala while increasing transportation services along the Najaf–Karbala route to accommodate the anticipated influx of visitors.

The committee further stressed the importance of maintaining smooth traffic flow within Karbala and strengthening coordination between security and service agencies to implement the reverse transport plan efficiently, ensuring the safe and orderly return of pilgrims to their home provinces after the Arbaeen pilgrimage.
