US Begins Transfer of ISIS Detainees From Syria to Iraq
…………
The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) has launched a mission to relocate ISIS detainees from northeastern Syria to Iraq, aiming to keep the militants in secure detention, according to a statement released Wednesday, Anadolu Agency reported. The operation reflects ongoing efforts to prevent any resurgence of the group.
CENTCOM said US forces have already transferred 150 ISIS fighters from a detention facility in Syria’s Hasakah province to a secure site in Iraq. The command noted that the initiative could eventually involve as many as 7,000 detainees being moved from Syria to facilities under Iraqi control, depending on conditions and coordination.
CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper said the United States is working closely with regional partners, including Iraq, to ensure the continued defeat of ISIS. He stressed that an orderly and secure transfer process is essential to prevent potential prison breaks that could threaten regional stability and US security interests.
