Iraq Plants Over 8 Million Trees in National Afforestation Initiative
…………..
Iraq’s Ministry of Agriculture announced that the National Afforestation Initiative has so far planted more than 8.7 million trees across the country, aiming to achieve five strategic environmental objectives. The program, launched under Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani during the 2023 Basra Climate Conference, seeks to enhance vegetation cover, improve air quality, and contribute to environmental sustainability.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture Mahdi Saher Al-Jubouri emphasized the importance of modern irrigation techniques to ensure the long-term survival of the newly planted trees. He highlighted close coordination between the Ministry of Agriculture, other government departments, local authorities, and the Prime Minister’s office in implementing the project.
The initiative is expected to mitigate pollution, enhance urban aesthetics, and support Iraq’s commitments to international environmental and climate goals. Authorities called on citizens, civil society organizations, and municipal offices nationwide, including Baghdad, to participate in maintaining and protecting the trees, ensuring the program’s sustainability and its positive impact on Iraq’s environment.
