Iraq Transfers 47 French ISIS Suspects from Syria for Trial

Iraq’s National Intelligence Service announced on Friday, September 19, that it has transferred 47 French nationals accused of belonging to the ISIS militant group from northeastern Syria to Iraq. The agency stated that the suspects are wanted by the Iraqi judiciary, with some implicated in terrorist attacks carried out in Iraq between 2014 and 2017, while others were involved in activities threatening national security from abroad.

According to the statement, the transfer was conducted under judicial arrest warrants based on investigations overseen by Iraqi courts, and the suspects will face trial under Iraqi law. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing ISIS members regardless of nationality or location.

Security officials told the Associated Press that the prisoners had been held in northeastern Syria, where about 9,000 ISIS fighters remain in custody under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces, before being handed over to Iraq six weeks ago.

This is not the first such transfer. In 2019, 13 French suspects were sent from Syria to Iraq for prosecution. Officials report that 3,192 detainees have been handed over in total, with 724 sentenced to death and 1,381 to life imprisonment.
