Iraq, Iran Approve Opening of Jilat Border Crossing to Boost Trade
……….
Iraq has approved the opening of the Jilat border crossing with Iran, located in Dehloran district of Ilam province, raising the number of active border points between the two countries to seven. The move is expected to enhance bilateral trade, expand regional transport, and ease travel for citizens on both sides.
According to Ilam officials, infrastructure on the Iranian side— including roads, customs facilities, and border guard stations—has been completed. Maysan Governor also confirmed his formal approval, supported by the ambassadors of both nations.
The Jilat crossing is strategically located near oil fields and agricultural zones, with direct links to Iraqi road networks, just 40 kilometers from Dehloran’s center. Authorities anticipate the reopening will stimulate cross-border commerce, increase oil and industrial exports, and generate jobs for local residents. The new crossing complements six others and supports the joint Iraqi-Iranian target of boosting annual trade volume to $30 billion.
