Drought Forces 742 Families from Central and Southern Iraq to Displace to Holy Najaf
…………….
The Migration and Displaced Affairs Department in Holy Najaf has reported the arrival of 742 families displaced from central and southern Iraq since 2023 due to severe drought and desertification. The worsening water shortage stems largely from Turkey’s ongoing reduction of Iraq’s water share, causing environmental degradation in the marshlands and agricultural lands, particularly near Naja Sea.
Most displaced families, primarily farmers, have settled in informal areas within Najaf city, especially in the Haydariya and Radwi neighborhoods, seeking work opportunities and refuge from harsh conditions. The department confirmed no internal displacement from Najaf to other cities for similar reasons.
Emergency assistance, including food baskets and healthcare, has been provided, and displaced families are registered in a government database to monitor their needs. These developments highlight growing concerns over Iraq’s escalating water crisis, which threatens millions reliant on rivers and natural resources for survival and stability.
