Iraq to Lead UN Conference on Dismantling Syria’s Al-Hol Camp

Iraq is set to host an international conference in mid-September at the United Nations headquarters in New York to address the future of Syria’s Al-Hol refugee camp. Organized in coordination with the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism, the conference will bring together concerned nations to develop a roadmap for dismantling the camp.

According to Iraq’s National Security Advisor, this initiative follows directives from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, who emphasized resolving the Al-Hol issue due to its impact on Iraq’s national and regional security. The camp, located in northeastern Syria, houses thousands of individuals—many with ties to extremist groups.

Iraqi officials have confirmed the repatriation of over 18,000 citizens from the camp, with fewer than 5,000 remaining. Strategic Advisor Saeed Al-Jayashi stated the conference will urge countries to reclaim their nationals, facilitating the camp’s eventual closure.

Iraq’s Ministry of Migration emphasized the importance of showcasing Iraq’s challenges and achievements in managing returns. Security analysts have described the camp as a “ticking time bomb,” hosting over 6,200 individuals from 42 countries.

International support is growing, with the U.S. expressing strong backing for Iraq’s efforts. Invitations have been extended globally, as Iraq seeks collective action to dismantle the camp and eliminate a major source of regional instability.
