Iraq’s Parliament Approves Jaafari Personal Status Law

The Iraqi Council of Representatives has approved a new codification of personal status laws based on Jaafari jurisprudence. During its seventh session of the current legislative term, held on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, and chaired by Speaker Dr. Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, 167 members attended and voted on the bill.

The legislation, submitted by the Shiite Endowment Office, was included in the session’s agenda and passed by majority vote. Earlier that day, the Shiite Endowment announced the completion of the legal draft by its scholarly council, detailing personal status regulations in accordance with Jaafari Islamic law.

This move marks a significant step in formally recognizing Jaafari legal provisions within Iraq’s legal system, following years of legal and political debate. The session concluded after the vote.
