International Prosecution of Bashar al-Assad and His Associates Begins
———————————————
International legal efforts to prosecute Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his inner circle for alleged crimes against the Syrian people have officially begun, Shia Waves Agency reported. According to Abdulbasit Abdul Latif, the head of the Syrian National Transitional Justice Commission, channels have been established to cooperate with Interpol and other international bodies to pursue Assad and his brother, Maher Assad. They are accused of severe crimes committed over the past fourteen years.
The prosecution will extend beyond the Assad brothers to include military and security commanders, as well as foreign forces such as members of specific Lebanese groups. The Transitional Justice Commission has a significant collection of documents related to these crimes, which were gathered after the fall of the former regime. Additionally, the commission is looking into the possibility of prosecuting those who defended or justified the alleged crimes.
Civil and legal organizations are also actively involved in this effort, working to gather information and identify victims.
