ISIS Attacks Syrian Checkpoint, Killing Five SDF Members
———————————
A checkpoint in Deir ez-Zor, Syria, was attacked on July 31 by the Islamic State (ISIS) group, resulting in the deaths of five members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Shia Waves Persian reported. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement.
The SDF, a key U.S. ally in the fight against ISIS, was instrumental in defeating the group in 2019. However, ISIS continues its efforts to reestablish its presence in the Middle East and other regions. Deir ez-Zor, which had been captured by ISIS in 2014, was retaken by the Syrian army in 2017.
