The ‘Bani Amer’ mourning group, recognized as one of the largest in Iraq, has commenced its annual march from Basra to Karbala in anticipation of Arbaeen.

According to Al-Sumaria, each year, Iraqi pilgrims from the Bani Amer procession begin their journey from the southernmost city of Basra, dressed in white, making their way to Karbala with great devotion and ceremony. They typically arrive on the 19th of Safar, one day before Arbaeen, after which they proceed chanting towards the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him).

This procession is among the largest Husseini gatherings worldwide, known for its religious and Quranic chants during the Arbaeen rituals held in Bain-ul-Haramain, the area between the shrines of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and Abalfazl al-Abbas (peace be upon him).

Arbaeen is a significant religious observance for Shia Muslims, taking place on the 40th day after Ashura to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), the beloved and revered grandson of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his pure family).

It is the world’s largest annual pilgrimages, attracting millions of Shia Muslims, along with many Sunnis and followers of other faiths, who travel on foot to Karbala from across Iraq and neighboring countries. This year, some 30 million pilgrims are expected to convene for holy Arbaeen.
