Prime Minister Al-Sudani Reopens Mosul International Airport, Full Operation Expected in Two Months

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani on Wednesday officially inaugurated the newly rebuilt Mosul International Airport, announcing it will be fully operational within two months following the appointment of a specialized operating company, Rudaw news agency reported. The reopening marks a significant milestone for Mosul, coinciding with the anniversary of the city’s liberation from ISIS in July 2017.

The airport’s infrastructure has been extensively upgraded, featuring a 3,000-meter runway extended by 350 meters to accommodate large passenger and cargo aircraft. Facilities include a modern terminal with arrival and departure halls, baggage handling systems, VIP areas, advanced runway lighting, and a control tower equipped with state-of-the-art radar surveillance.

Originally destroyed during ISIS occupation in 2014, the airport was recaptured in February 2017 after a joint military campaign. Its revival is expected to boost economic recovery and regional air travel, with an annual capacity of 630,000 passengers and 30,000 tons of cargo.
