U.S. Strike May Be Linked to Deadly Attack on Iranian School, Reports Suggest

A recent report by The New York Times indicates that a February 28 strike on the Shajarat Tayyiba elementary school in Minab, southern Iran, may be connected to U.S. military operations targeting a nearby Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval base. The strike, which occurred during school hours, resulted in dozens of civilian casualties, including children.
Satellite imagery, social media posts, and video evidence analyzed by the newspaper show severe damage to the school alongside precise hits on multiple structures within the naval base. Experts suggest the school may have been struck accidentally due to its proximity to military targets.
U.S. officials have confirmed ongoing investigations. White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt stated that the administration is unaware of any intentional strike on the school, while Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth noted that inquiries are ongoing. The U.S. Navy’s USS Abraham Lincoln reportedly conducted operations along Iran’s southeastern coast at the time, focusing on weakening naval capabilities near the Strait of Hormuz.
Legal analysts note that if civilian casualties resulted from misidentification or outdated intelligence, the incident could raise questions under international law regarding the protection of noncombatants.
