Iran’s government has confirmed that Ali Khamenei has been killed in a joint military airstrike campaign by the United States and Israel, marking a dramatic escalation of conflict in the Middle East and sending shockwaves internationally.
State media reported early Sunday that Khamenei, 86, was killed in a targeted air attack on his compound in downtown Tehran on February 28, 2026. The Iranian government declared 40 days of national mourning and seven days of official closures following the strike.
U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier announced Khamenei’s death on social media, describing the operation — dubbed “Operation Epic Fury” — as part of a strategy to neutralize Iran’s leadership and nuclear ambitions. Israeli officials also stated that several senior Iranian leaders and military commanders were killed alongside Khamenei.
According to Iranian state reporting, members of Khamenei’s immediate family were among the casualties. Satellite imagery showed heavy bombardment of the Supreme Leader’s complex. The strikes are the most intense military action against Iran in decades, drawing immediate global concern.
In response, Iran’s cabinet condemned the attacks and vowed that “this great crime will never go unanswered.” Tehran has reportedly launched retaliatory missile and drone strikes against U.S. bases in the Gulf and Israeli targets, prompting a broader security crisis across the region.
International reactions have ranged from calls for de-escalation to expressions of alarm at the potential for a wider conflagration. The UN Secretary-General and the EU urged restraint, while Russia and China criticized the strikes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts.
