A recent study has revealed widespread positive reception of Islamic religious education among students in schools across Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The findings indicate that most participants view these lessons as closely connected to their daily lives and helpful in fostering their religious and cultural interests.

The study, conducted by the Center for Islamic Theology, showed consistently positive evaluations of the curriculum from students, parents, and school administrations since its formal introduction in 2012. According to the NRW Ministry of Education, Islamic religious education is currently offered in 247 schools, reaching over 31,000 students, reflecting the program’s expansion in recent years.

Researchers highlighted that continued instruction in Islamic religious education supports students’ religious development, enabling them to understand their faith in an informed and balanced manner while aligning with democratic values. The study emphasized the broader educational and social role of the program in promoting coexistence and positive integration within the school environment and the wider community.
