Oak Ridge Schools Approve New Student Forums, Including Islamic Harmony Club
……………

The Oak Ridge Board of Education in Tennessee has approved the creation of three new student forums, including the Muslim Harmony club at Oak Ridge High School. The decision, made on 17 November, highlights growing recognition of the city’s diverse student population and the importance of promoting dialogue and inclusion.

The Muslim Harmony forum was proposed by students and is designed to provide a space for learning about Islam as a faith rooted in spiritual and ethical values. Organizers aim to offer an open environment for students of all backgrounds to explore Islamic history, principles, and cultural contributions.

Teachers and administrators described the initiative as a positive step toward strengthening respect and reducing misconceptions, particularly at a time when cultural tensions remain visible in parts of the United States. The forum’s stated goals include encouraging constructive discussion, addressing stereotypes, and fostering unity within the school community. Supporters say it reflects a broader commitment to mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.

In addition to the Islamic forum, the board approved two other student-led groups: a Turning Point USA chapter and the Big Brick Club at Robertsville Middle School, which focuses on LEGO model-building. All three forums were approved under district policies that ensure equal access and prohibit the rejection of student organizations based on religious or ideological grounds.
