World’s Largest Renewable Energy Park Plagued by Unpaid Wages and Harsh Conditions

Workers at the world’s largest renewable energy park in Gujarat, India, are quitting due to a variety of harsh conditions, including unpaid wages, searing heat, and 12-hour shifts. According to a report from The Guardian, migrant workers, primarily from Jharkhand, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh, were drawn to the project with promises of good wages and stable employment.

However, the reality of the job is often severe. The article highlights that a complex chain of subcontracting leads to delayed or unpaid wages, making it difficult to hold the main companies accountable. Workers also face poor living conditions in makeshift tents with limited access to clean water or power. Many are forced to leave without their earned pay and often have to borrow money to return home. The sector is described as largely unregulated, and workers often do not know how to file complaints, which undermines the project’s sustainability and India’s ambitious green energy goals.
