Tehran Faces Severe Water Crisis as Relocation Looms
…………….
Tehran’s worsening water crisis may force the relocation of its 15 million residents, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned on Thursday. Speaking to local media, Pezeshkian said the capital is “almost out of water,” and relocating residents is being considered as an emergency measure.
Iran is currently facing critical water shortages in over 20 of its 31 provinces. State news agency IRNA reported that one of the country’s largest reservoirs could dry up within weeks, while levels in seven others have dropped below 10 percent. Two dams have completely dried up, and most reservoirs are nearly empty.
The crisis has been attributed to prolonged drought and years of inadequate government planning. Government offices, schools, and many factories remain closed due to the shortages. Experts say relief is unlikely before seasonal rains return in two months. Many residents have already fled Tehran for northern regions with more stable water supplies.
