French Woman to Stand Trial for Alleged Genocide Against Yazidis
…………..
French national Sonia Mugri, 36, will stand trial on charges of genocide against the Yazidi minority after France’s highest court rejected her appeal, according to legal sources. She is the first French woman to face such charges, which carry a potential life sentence.
Mugri is accused of participating in the enslavement of a 16-year-old Yazidi girl in Syria in 2015 while living with her then-husband, Abdel Nasser Ben Youssef, a former senior member of the ISIS militant group.
Investigators say Mugri held the keys to the girl’s confinement and carried a weapon to prevent her escape. Mugri denies any wrongdoing, claiming her husband controlled the girl. Ben Youssef will be tried in absentia, as he is believed to have been killed in 2016.
