Mass Grave in Sinai Reveals Unlawful Killings by Egyptian Army
————————————
The Sinai Foundation for Human Rights (SFHR) has discovered a mass grave in Egypt’s Sinai province, a finding that suggests widespread unlawful killings by the Egyptian army. According to a report from The Guardian, the discovery was made while the SFHR was investigating disappearances and extrajudicial killings of civilians during a decade-long conflict with Islamic State-aligned militants.

The grave, located south of al-Arish, was heavily concealed by a military presence. SFHR researchers, along with Forensic Architecture, a London-based research agency, identified the remains of multiple individuals, with researchers estimating over 300 bodies at the site. The bodies were found buried without respect for local customs, and some were blindfolded with no signs of military uniforms.

Ahmed Salem, the executive director of the SFHR, stated that the findings provide documented evidence of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial executions, pointing to a “systematic pattern of unlawful killings.” Sources told the SFHR that the victims were not necessarily militants but were suspected of collaborating with them and were executed without any legal process.
