Train Derailment in Northern Egypt Kills 3, Injures Over 100

A passenger train derailment on Saturday in Matrouh province, northern Egypt, killed three people and injured 103 others, Anadolu Agency reported.

The National Railways Authority reported that seven carriages of a train traveling from Marsa Matrouh to Cairo came off the tracks around 3:30 p.m. local time, with two carriages overturning. Rescue teams were deployed to clear the wreckage and restore service on the line.

The Health Ministry confirmed that injuries ranged from fractures and lacerations to bruises, with 87 patients discharged after treatment. Hospitals across Matrouh and neighboring provinces were placed on high alert, with medical teams dispatched to support facilities handling casualties.

The Transport Ministry launched an investigation into the cause of the derailment and promised “maximum penalties” for those found responsible. Authorities said further updates would be provided as the investigation continues.

Egypt has invested billions of dollars in recent years to modernize its rail network, one of the oldest in the Middle East.
