UN Libya mission reports attempted rocket attack on Headquarters
——————————–
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) reported that its headquarters in Tripoli came under a rocket attack on Friday, with no casualties or damage, Arab News reported. The Libyan Interior Ministry said it thwarted an attempted anti-tank missile strike targeting the UNSMIL compound. The rocket instead struck a house in Janzour, on the outskirts of Tripoli, though the distance from the UN compound was not specified.
Authorities seized a pickup truck carrying two additional missiles and a launch platform but did not identify the perpetrators. Libya remains divided between the UN-recognized government in Tripoli, led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah, and a rival administration in the east. The country has been unstable since the 2011 NATO-backed overthrow of Muammar Qaddafi.
The attack occurred as UNSMIL chief Hanna Tetteh briefed the UN Security Council. The Tripoli government condemned the attack as a serious threat to security and pledged to unify security forces and dismantle illegal armed groups.
