Refugee Organization Criticizes Egypt Over Treatment of Sudanese Refugees

Refugees International has raised alarm over the deteriorating conditions faced by Sudanese refugees in Egypt, calling for immediate international intervention, Jurist News reported. A recent report, “No Model of Refuge,” highlights risks of deportation, restricted access to essential services, and legal uncertainties following Egypt’s new asylum law passed in December 2024.

The law allows authorities to revoke refugee status and criminalizes illegal entry, raising concerns among human rights organizations. Sudanese refugees are reportedly denied healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, with schools for Sudanese children shut down and hospitals refusing treatment.

Amnesty International has documented cases of arbitrary detention and forced returns, with at least 800 Sudanese refugees deported without due process between January and March 2024. The ongoing violence in Sudan exacerbates the humanitarian crisis, as mediation efforts between conflicting forces have repeatedly failed. Refugees International urges donor nations to pressure Egypt to revise its asylum policies and uphold international refugee protection standards.
