UNAMA Warns of Rising Censorship, Targeting of Journalists

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has warned that press freedom and independent journalism are facing unprecedented global pressure due to censorship, attacks on journalists, declining media funding, and the spread of AI-generated misinformation.

Citing a UNESCO-supported report, UNAMA highlighted the essential role of independent media in providing reliable information, promoting transparency, combating corruption and helping societies respond to crises. The mission warned that weakening free journalism could limit public access to accurate information and undermine accountability.

The warning comes as Afghanistan’s media sector continues to face severe challenges following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, including restrictions on reporting, limited access to information, economic difficulties and reduced support for independent outlets.

UNAMA also pointed to wider global concerns over artificial intelligence and disinformation, stressing the need to protect trustworthy journalism as a foundation for informed societies.
