Severe Weather and Flooding Hit Afghanistan; Death Toll Rises and Widespread Damage Reported

Afghanistan is experiencing another destructive series of severe weather events—with heavy rain, flash floods, landslides and strong winds—that have resulted in dozens of deaths, extensive damage and ongoing warnings for continued hazardous conditions. Authorities and disaster officials have reported mounting casualties and extensive impacts across multiple provinces.

In the past 48 hours alone, at least 24 people have been killed by heavy rain and floodwaters in northern and central provinces, including Baghlan and Badakhshan, while others have been injured and homes destroyed. More than 100 houses were damaged or washed away in Baghlan province, and thousands of acres of agricultural land were inundated. Violent windstorms in Kandahar also killed several people and injured others, highlighting the broad geographic scope of the weather crisis.

These latest fatalities add to earlier figures from recent weeks, when severe flooding and landslides killed at least 148 people and injured over 130 more across Afghanistan, destroying over 1,100 homes and damaging vital infrastructure such as roads and irrigation systems.

Afghanistan’s meteorological authorities continue to issue warnings for further rain and severe weather through the coming days, urging residents to avoid flood‑prone areas such as riverbanks and low‑lying terrain. Major routes including the Salang Pass and highways connecting the capital Kabul to other regions have been repeatedly disrupted by landslides and flooding, complicating travel and relief operations.
