Afghanistan Launches Nationwide Polio Vaccination Campaign
……….
Afghanistan has initiated a nationwide polio vaccination campaign targeting children in high-risk regions, Khaama Press reported. The campaign, which began on Monday, December 15, aims to protect vulnerable children from the continued threat of polio, with vaccination teams deployed across multiple provinces. Exact locations and the number of children covered have not been disclosed.
According to the World Health Organization, Afghanistan has reported two polio cases this year, in Badghis and Helmand provinces, underscoring the country’s ongoing vulnerability to the disease. Earlier in 2025, UN agencies coordinated several vaccination drives in partnership with local authorities to limit polio transmission and strengthen public health.
Health experts note that limited healthcare access and conflict in remote areas remain significant obstacles to eradicating polio. International partners continue to support the campaigns, emphasizing community outreach, awareness, and engagement to ensure broad vaccination coverage. Authorities hope that these efforts will reinforce Afghanistan’s public health infrastructure and curb further outbreaks.
