Taliban Dismiss 90 Female Literacy Teachers in Nangarhar
……………..

The Taliban have dismissed 90 female teachers working in adult literacy programs in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province, local sources told Amu on Sunday. The teachers, employed under the Directorate of Education, had been teaching literacy classes in rural areas, with salaries funded by humanitarian organizations.

According to the sources, the Taliban have now closed all literacy centers and terminated the instructors’ employment. The decision marks another restriction on women’s education and work since the group regained power in 2021. Girls remain barred from secondary and higher education, and women’s jobs are limited mainly to health care.

Aid agencies warn that excluding women from education is severely undermining humanitarian and development efforts, especially those targeting female literacy. The Taliban have not issued a comment on the reported dismissals. According to UNESCO, fewer than 30 percent of Afghan women are literate—the lowest rates globally—and recent bans risk reversing decades of progress.
