The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that over 2,100 people lost their lives in the recent 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan, Khaama Press reported. The death toll includes 516 women, 476 men, 509 girls, and 663 boys, highlighting the severe impact on families in the affected areas.

According to OCHA’s update on Thursday, humanitarian agencies have provided food assistance to more than 60,800 people, while shelter support such as tents and temporary housing has reached at least 1,000 individuals. Despite these efforts, aid resources remain limited, and the approaching winter poses additional challenges.

Ten days after the earthquake hit Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, survivors continue to suffer from critical shortages of food, shelter, and medical supplies, with many still living in unsafe conditions. Aid organizations emphasize the urgent need for international support to prevent further casualties, especially among vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

This disaster highlights Afghanistan’s vulnerability to natural disasters and underscores the pressing need for sustained humanitarian funding amid ongoing crises that strain global assistance efforts.
