WHO Warns of Deepening Health Crisis in Afghanistan as 22 Million Need Aid

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that Afghanistan is facing a severe and worsening humanitarian crisis, with more than 22 million people in urgent need of assistance, Khaama Press reported. The country’s health system is on the verge of collapse, according to a report released by the organization on Thursday.

The WHO report highlights a critical funding shortfall. While over 16 million Afghans were targeted for life-saving aid this year, only 24% of the necessary funding has been secured. This deficit has led to the closure of more than 420 health facilities, cutting off nearly three million people from essential medical services. The most vulnerable populations, including women and children, have been hit the hardest.

The health crisis is compounded by widespread malnutrition, outbreaks of diseases like measles and polio, and rising mental health challenges. The situation is expected to worsen as Afghanistan prepares for the large-scale return of migrants, with over a million people anticipated to return from Pakistan and up to two million from Iran in 2025.

The WHO is urging the global community to increase its aid contributions, warning that without immediate support, millions of people could face preventable deaths from disease, hunger, and a lack of medical care.
