Iran Criticized for Expelling Migrants with Legal Status
——————————–
Iran is facing criticism for the mass deportation of Afghan migrants, including those who hold legal residency documents, Khaama Press reported. According to a report by The Khaama Press, Hassan Mousavi Chelik, the head of Iran’s Association of Social Workers, stated that officials are failing to distinguish between “legal” and “illegal” migrants during these operations.
The mass deportations have led to cases of mistaken identity, such as an Iranian child being deported as an Afghan, and families being separated. Over the past 100 days, more than one million Afghans have been expelled, with 400,000 of them from Tehran province alone, according to Governor Mohammad Sadeq Motamedian.
The article also cites reports of violence, including an allegation that a family member died under torture in a detention camp. Rights advocates have warned that these practices risk violating human rights and straining relations between Iran and Afghanistan. They have called for international monitoring to ensure that deportations are conducted lawfully and humanely, with safeguards for vulnerable groups like children.
