WFP Sounds Alarm on Soaring Hunger in Afghanistan, Appeals for $539 Million

The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a grave warning regarding the escalating hunger crisis in Afghanistan, urgently appealing for $539 million in aid to sustain its operations over the next six months, Khaama Press reported. The agency, in a statement released on Sunday, August 3, 2025, highlighted the dire circumstances faced by returning women and children, who are among the most severely affected by the worsening food insecurity.

According to the WFP, Afghanistan’s economic instability and widespread poverty are making it increasingly difficult for families to access basic food supplies. Data from the organization indicates that two-thirds of households led by women are unable to provide adequate food for their families, leaving millions in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The WFP also reported that 3.5 million Afghan children are currently suffering from malnutrition, exacerbating the humanitarian emergency.

With 10 million people across the country now dependent on humanitarian aid for survival, Afghanistan ranks as one of the world’s most food-insecure nations. The WFP stressed that without immediate and sustained international funding, the risk of widespread hunger and profound suffering, particularly among vulnerable women and children, is projected to intensify in the coming months.
