UN Warns of Systematic Marginalization of Afghan Women and Vulnerable Groups

The UN Human Rights Chief has raised urgent concerns over the severe deterioration of women’s rights in Afghanistan, warning they have been systematically removed from public life, Khaama Press reported. Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, delivered a stark assessment during the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council, highlighting widespread restrictions and discrimination faced by women and girls under Taliban rule.
Türk emphasized that Afghan women are increasingly “erased from public life,” with bans on education, employment, and movement, leading to a deepening humanitarian crisis. He also highlighted the grave threats confronting LGBTQ+ individuals and people with disabilities, urging the international community to increase protective measures for these vulnerable groups.
The official expressed concern over declining international support, noting that some countries have reduced humanitarian funding at a time when Afghan women’s vulnerability is escalating. Richard Bennett, UN Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, called for the establishment of an independent accountability mechanism to document ongoing abuses and ensure justice.
Global outrage persists over the systematic gender apartheid, which continues to oppress women’s fundamental rights amidst minimal accountability. Human rights experts warn that without stronger international pressure, the situation for Afghan women and marginalized groups may worsen further.
