Over 400 health centers shut down in Afghanistan amid aid shortage

More than 400 health facilities have ceased operations across Taliban-controlled areas of Afghanistan, depriving over three million people of access to basic medical care, the World Health Organization (WHO) and Global Health Cluster said in a joint statement.

The closure of 422 centers in 30 provinces follows a halt in international funding, which had been the primary source of support for these clinics. Health organizations warn that the suspension could lead to a severe deterioration in public health, particularly affecting women and children, as the country continues to grapple with a deepening economic and humanitarian crisis.

Since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, Afghanistan has witnessed a sharp decline in foreign aid, significantly impacting key sectors such as healthcare. Humanitarian groups are urging the international community to develop alternative mechanisms to sustain essential services for the Afghan population.
