UNICEF Vaccinates 2 Million Afghan Children Against Measles

UNICEF has successfully vaccinated 2 million children under five in Afghanistan against measles, a critical step to curb the highly contagious disease amid rising cases, Khaama Press reported. The campaign targets vulnerable populations, particularly in rural and conflict-affected regions, where healthcare access is limited.

In 2023, Afghanistan reported 25,000 suspected measles cases and 64 deaths, prompting urgent action. The World Health Organization (WHO) and partners like Doctors Without Borders warned of daily child fatalities in provinces like Herat and Balkh due to measles complications, exacerbated by malnutrition.

UNICEF emphasized that vaccines are the most effective prevention tool, aligning with global health goals. Despite security challenges, the initiative reflects a sustained commitment to child health, with plans to expand coverage.

Michaël Le Paih of Doctors Without Borders noted, “Vaccination is a lifeline for malnourished children.” The campaign underscores the need for continued collaboration to ensure no child is left unprotected.
