EU Urges Protection of Women’s Rights in Afghanistan

The European Union has called for the full and equal realization of human rights for Afghan women and girls, advocating for their empowerment, participation, and leadership across all sectors of society while denouncing the Taliban’s systematic oppression, Amu TV reported.
During the 92nd Standing Committee of the UNHCR in Geneva, the EU and its member states reiterated their commitment to supporting Afghan refugees and displaced individuals. “We condemn the deliberate and systematic oppression of women, girls, and marginalized groups by the Taliban,” the EU stated.
The EU emphasized its humanitarian funding to the UNHCR, which aids Afghan refugees both within the country and in neighboring nations, particularly Iran and Pakistan. It commended the agency’s efforts in providing essential aid, legal documentation, and resilience-building programs for returning Afghans, while encouraging a continued inclusive humanitarian response.

Additionally, the EU highlighted the importance of ongoing evaluations of Afghanistan’s evolving security landscape, especially regarding the dangers facing returning refugees. While recognizing the generosity of Pakistan and Iran in accommodating millions of displaced Afghans, the EU expressed concern over the deportation of undocumented refugees, asserting, “The principle of non-refoulement must be upheld,” which prohibits the forced return of individuals to countries where they may face persecution.
The EU urged the UNHCR to continue its advocacy against deportations and ensure that Afghans have access to legal protection and stability in their host nations. Beyond Afghanistan, the EU also addressed the escalating crisis in Myanmar and the situation of Rohingya refugees, calling for stronger international efforts to protect civilians and uphold humanitarian law. It reaffirmed its stance against the reported deportation of Uyghurs, emphasizing the need to respect the principle of non-refoulement in all circumstances.
