UNICEF Reports Educational Crisis in Afghanistan on International Education Day
On January 24, International Education Day, UNICEF revealed that floods in Afghanistan have destroyed or damaged 110 schools in 2024, impacting the education of thousands of students, Khaama Press reported. The organization highlighted this crisis via its X account, emphasizing the urgent need for support in the region.
Additionally, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) called on the Taliban to lift the ban on education for millions of Afghan girls, labeling the situation a “tragedy.” It has been 1,225 days since Afghan girls were denied their fundamental right to education.
Established by the UN General Assembly in 2018, International Education Day aims to promote access to education as a fundamental human right. As many countries celebrate educational achievements, Afghanistan’s ongoing challenges—such as school destruction and restrictions on girls’ education—underscore the necessity for global action to address educational inequalities and ensure a brighter future for all Afghan children.
