WFP Highlights Afghanistan’s Vulnerability to Climate Crises

The World Food Programme (WFP) has identified Afghanistan as the sixth most vulnerable country to climate crises, emphasizing its investment in flood prediction and food preparation for high-risk areas, Khaama Press reported today.

On October 5th, the WFP announced that its early warning system can forecast floods and pinpoint at-risk regions, enabling emergency assistance to be provided up to three months in advance.

Gabriela Luz from WFP’s Early Warning and Famine Prevention team warned of expected decreased rainfall and snowfall this winter. Currently, 12.4 million people in Afghanistan face hunger, exacerbated by recent floods that affected over 80,000 individuals. The WFP estimates that $14 million is needed to address the country’s climate and food crises.

As winter approaches, the WFP is ramping up efforts to deliver food and essential supplies to the most vulnerable populations. The organization has called for international support to ensure timely aid and mitigate the ongoing impacts of climate change on Afghan communities.
