Taliban’s Ministry Labels Women’s Rights as “International Terrorism”

The Taliban’s Ministry for Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice recently described women’s rights as “international terrorism” and criticized the United Nations for what they perceive as an imposition of foreign values on Afghanistan, Hasht-e-Subh Daily reported in an article on Thursday.

The Ministry described the UN’s remarks on the Taliban’s new law as indicative of the UN’s psychological issues and asserted that the Taliban perceive international laws as “oppressive, tyrannical, and inhumane.” He also used a proverb to indirectly suggest that the UN is “mad.”

Spokesperson Saif-ul-Islam Khyber claimed that the UN’s interpretation of the Taliban’s laws reflects a misunderstanding of their cultural and religious context. He argued that the UN should consider the values of “minority nations” when formulating its laws.

In a series of tweets, Khyber stated that the Taliban views international laws as oppressive and called for the right to create laws based on their religious framework. He further asserted that the Taliban has been in communication with embassies in Japan, China, and Russia to clarify their position regarding new laws.

The remarks come as international pressure mounts, with several countries, including Germany and Australia, indicating potential legal action against the Taliban at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) if conditions for women and girls do not improve. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has also expressed support for these efforts, highlighting concerns about the treatment of women in Afghanistan. The ongoing dialogue between the Taliban and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) reflects attempts to navigate these complex international relations.
