WFP: Over 12 million people can face acute food insecurity in Afghanistan
The United Nations’ Food Agency projects that a staggering 12.4 million people in Afghanistan will face acute food insecurity from May to October 2024, Amu TV reported yesterday.
According to the World Food Programme (WFP), 2.9 million of these individuals are classified in the emergency Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Phase 4.
The report also noted that 4 million people, including 3.2 million children under five, are acutely malnourished.
Compounding the crisis, the WFP stated that at least 23.7 million Afghans will require humanitarian assistance in 2024.
Recent devastating floods in six provinces have only exacerbated the situation, destroying homes, agricultural fields, and livestock.
As Afghanistan grapples with this dire food security emergency, urgent international aid and intervention remain critical.
