Afghan political activists to be publicly arrested as Taliban cracks down on opposition voices

Following the implementation of extensive bans against political movements, the Ministry of Justice of the Taliban has declared any activity under the title of a political party illegal.

The group, which canceled the directorate of political parties in the Ministry of Justice, threatened that no one has the right to political activity in Afghanistan any longer.

According to the Taliban’s new warning, any political stance and movement by the parties is considered a crime and those who engage in political activity will be arrested and imprisoned.

In the meantime, the Taliban government in Kandahar province has sentenced three people to prison for alleged political activities.

The Taliban-controlled Supreme Court of Afghanistan said in a newsletter that two of these people were sentenced to 15 years in prison and the other to 30 lashes.

The Taliban have not only criminalized the activities of political parties and political activists in the country, but has also treated any kind of civil and human rights activities with torture, imprisonment and firing.

In the past two and a half years, several women’s rights activists and protesters have been tortured in the prisons of this group, and the bodies of some of them have been handed over to their families after being imprisoned for months.

In the latest development, Amnesty International strongly criticized Taliban’s stubborn approach, describing it as “cruel and a systematic attack on a generation”. The organization emphasized that the Taliban have placed Afghanistan on the verge of “irreversible destruction”.
