The Afghan government reportedly freed on Saturday 50 more Taliban prisoners hoping that the country can start long-expected peace negotiations.
According to the Afghan news channel TOLO news, some of the released prisoners were detained for heavy crimes but it was done due to the latest tweet from Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen who said that that the “Islamic Emirate is ready to release all remaining prisoners of the other side before the eve of Eid al-Adha provided they release our prisoners as per our list already delivered to them. Likely, IEA is ready to begin intra-Afghan negotiations immediately after Eid.”
The Taliban signed a peace deal with the United States in February aiming to bring an end to the 18-year long conflict.
